Recommended Materials and Required Yardage
1. Main Fabric: a medium-weight fabric that holds shape but allows for slight movement and drape:
Cotton Poplin (120–150 gsm) - Crisp, breathable, and ideal for structured silhouettes. Easy
to sew and holds printed stripes well.
Cotton Sateen (130–170 gsm) - Slight sheen, smooth finish, a bit more formal. Offers a
polished look without being too stiff.
Linen-Cotton Blend (150–200 gsm) - Natural texture, breathable, softens over time. Gives
a summery and relaxed yet tailored look.
Tencel or Lyocell Twill (160–210 gsm) - Eco-friendly, soft, with a fluid drape. For a more
flowing skirt while keeping structure in the bodice.
2. Lining (Optional, for Bodice)
Lightweight Cotton Voile or Batiste (70–100 gsm) - Soft, breathable, perfect for summer
dresses. Prevents transparency and adds comfort.
Silk Habotai or Acetate Lining (50–90 gsm) - For a more luxurious finish. Good if you
want a dressier interior.
3. Additional Components optional - Interfacing (for support): at seams and zipper areas.
4. Zipper: cotton tape zipper with lightweight metal teeth for contrast or hidden zipper.
✓ The estimates of the amount of fabric needed for the dress are based on 60” wide (150 cm) fabrics.
Main fabric: approx 150 cm if the lining is made from the same fabric; approx 100 cm if a separate lining fabric is used;
Lining: approx 50 cm;
Zipper 50-60 cm.
✓ Tools and Threads:
Ensure you have essential tools like a ruler, tape measure, and spools of thread that match your fabric.
For most woven fabrics like linen, cotton, poplin, twill, or wool blends, standard polyester thread is
recommended. It is durable, widely available, and provides good strength and flexibility through repeated
washing and wear. Always match the thread color as closely as possible to your fabric.
