Natural Fabrics (Breathable, Comfortable, Elegant):
• Cotton – Classic, breathable;
• Linen – Lightweight, perfect for summer, offering a relaxed look.
Cotton or linen can be 100% pure or blended with other fibers. Variations:
• Cotton-polyester blend (for wrinkle resistance);
• Linen-cotton blend (for a balance between texture and durability).
Synthetic or Blended Fabrics (For Easy Maintenance and Durability)
• Polyester/Viscose/Elastane – Wrinkle-resistant, easy to maintain.
• Jacquard – A uniquely textured fabric, great for statement shirts.
Asian-Style Shirt Fabrics: If you want to sew a shirt inspired by the Asian style, you can explore fabrics
that best match this aesthetic. However, consider your sewing skill level, as some fabrics may be more
challenging to work with.
The fabrics used for Chinese-style shirts with a mandarin collar are typically brocade, silk jacquard,
or a cotton-linen blend, offering a structured yet refined look. These fabrics are chosen to provide both
elegance and the necessary rigidity to maintain the distinctive collar shape and structured cut.
Specific Fabric Types:
❖ Brocade – A rich fabric, usually silk or with metallic thread inserts, featuring embossed woven
patterns. Commonly used for festive or ceremonial shirts due to its sophisticated appearance.
❖ Silk Jacquard – A lighter version of brocade with subtle patterns and a refined finish, ideal for
elegant shirts. It offers fluidity and a slight sheen while maintaining the necessary structure.
❖ Cotton-Linen Blend – A more casual yet still elegant option for daily wear. This blend combines
linen’s breathability with cotton’s smoothness, giving a natural texture and a structured but relaxed
look.
❖ Tussah (Wild Silk) – A slightly rougher fabric with a naturally irregular texture, offering an artisanal
yet sophisticated feel. Ideal for traditional Asian-style shirts.
❖ Shantung (Textured Silk) – A fabric with a slightly grainy surface and a discreet sheen, balancing
elegance with structure.
❖ Silk Satin or Polyester Blends – For a more fluid and glossy appearance, with easier maintenance
than pure silk.
These fabrics are selected for their aesthetic and functional properties, allowing the creation of structured
yet comfortable shirts that preserve the traditional Chinese style.
• The fabric requirements are calculated based on materials with a width of 60 inches (150 cm):
Main fabric: 100 cm;
Interfacing: 20 cm;
Frog closures (Chinese knot buttons): 8-10 pc.
* Ruler, tape measure, spools of thread to match your fabric (for stretch knit fabric the most common threads used to sew are textured polyester or textured nylon threads, textured threads are ideal for overedge and coverstitch seams because they offer excellent seam coverage and seam elasticity, this kind of thread you can use to avoiding popped seams), scissors or rotary, iron, clips or pins.
* Sewing machine. We use Janome DC3050 – it can do straight stitches, buttonholes and some of decorative stitches, also con replace overlock by zigzag stitch (it has several type of zigzag stitches); Janome myLock 644D for overlock stitches. When I was student I had Minerva, Brother and Juki but my choice is Janome for more than 13 years.
